Short Thought - The Release of Dark Souls 3

The Dark Souls series is one on it's own. Each release is met with a massive amount of excitement, displayed by a tiny niche of the gaming community. There are no other games that quite capture this dread, excitement and intrigue like a FromSoftware title.

I was originally quite mute about the release of Dark Souls 3. Two years ago I was incredibly excited for the release of Dark Souls 2. The sequel left me with a sour taste in my mouth, it was by no means a bad game, even ranking as one of the best games released in 2014; it was not produced with the passion that the original had been. Dumbed down for a casual audience and missing the studio head Hidetaka Miyazaki, Dark Souls 2 failed to ignite the passion of the community like Dark Souls did.

Three years later, Hidetaka Miyazaki is back at the reigns, fresh off the back of Bloodborne. For me, Bloodborne was what Dark Souls 2 could never be - fresh, brash and hard enough to provide a challenging experience to hardcore Souls fans. It was and still is one of the most quintessential experiences on PlayStation 4. It was one of the few games that PC and Xbox One owners looked over at and felt kinda sad because they couldn't play it.

Dark Souls 3 is only a few weeks away from release. Everyone at GameGrin is desperate for a review code, because it is Dark Souls. But I was still not interested, convincing myself that I would only end up disappointed, doubting the likelihood they they would ever topple the calibre of Bloodborne.

We are now two weeks from release and I can no longer hold my excitement. Before I left for work this morning I ended up watching a quick impressions video by Jim Sterling. At first glance the game looks beautiful, but that's not what suckered me in. Instead it is that initial feeling of dread and uncertainty. You are never sure what awaits you around the next corner, that feeling draws me in.

I am buying Dark Souls 3 on release. There's no other outcome in my near future. I can't wait to explore the world of Lothric, as it no doubt chews me up and spits me out. I'd have it no other way.
