Frequently Asked Questions

Whether this is your first LAN or your fiftieth, there's always some common questions to be answered.

Details are below for the usual things, but if you have a specific question that's not answered here, ask on the forums for help.

General

What do I need to bring?

The bare minimum you should bring when attending GameOn LAN #92 will be:

  • You
  • Your PC or Laptop (including peripherals, keyboard, mouse, monitor)
  • A change of clothes (or two!)
  • Sleeping equipment, such as an air-bed or mat.

Is it a problem if I'm under 18?

Not at all, as long as your parents agree you can attend.

As a LAN is a minimum of two days, written consent from your parents is all that is needed. We are happy to speak to parents that may have concerns.

My friends wants to come, but doesn't have a PC?

There are a limited number of seats which can be used for spectators, however, in order to minimise risk we ask that they pay a nominal fee to attend as their seat may also take a spot from a player.

They must book into the LAN system as a spectator and pay for their seat as if they were a player.

Food & Drinks

What food & drinks are available?

There is a canteen at the event that will be selling various hot and cold food, drinks and snacks throughout. You can see the menu andplace orders either at the canteen or on the GameOn LAN #92 MyLan site here.

The event is situated close (less than 5 minutes drive) to a Tesco supermarket, if you need other sustinace.

But… Alcohol?

Whilst there is no alcohol provided by GameOn* or the canteen, you may bring your own. We only ask that consumption of alcohol is done in a civilised, responsible fashion.

* GameOn does not operate a license to sell alcohol.

GameOn do NOT endorse the consumption of alcohol by attendees that are under the legal drinking age of 18.

Please respect our wishes to have a safe friendly atmosphere, attendees found to be violent or abusive as a result of alcohol or supplying alcohol to under 18's will be removed from the LAN without compensation. A ban may be imposed† to prevent the individual attending any future events.

† To date, GameOn has never had any alcohol related incidents at any previous LAN Party.

Technical

What if my computer breaks when I get there?

During transit the components in a PC may sometimes unseat themselves, causing problems when setting up at a LAN.

GameOn staff and other LAN attendees will usually lend a helping hand.

GameOn do not take any responsibility for installing or configuring hardware at a LAN event.

Some of the regular attendees of GameOn LANs have many years experience in dealing with computers but advice is to be followed at the user's own risk.

Will PCs be provided/available for rent for the weekend?

In short, no. There are no 'standby' PCs that can be utilised for a player seat from GameOn. However, some attendees will have parts that may be able to form a PC, or possibly even bring a second PC to help out those that may need it.

Your best bet is to check/ask on the forums in advance if this is something you may need.

Gaming

What servers will be available? What games will we play?

There will be a range of dedicated servers already set up when you get to the LAN so that you can start playing straight away. Most commonly, these will be:

  • Team Fortress 2
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

However, due to the changing landscape of multiplayer gaming, more games are coming without dedicated server support and require a player to host the game from their machine. In this case organise amongst the players who'd be happy to host.

If there's a dedicated server available and you'd like one setting up for the LAN, please request it on the forums and we'll try and get it arranged.

Travel

I want to attend, but I don't drive?

Nothing should come between you and attending the LAN, least not travelling.

There are attendees that come from around the country to the LAN, so there's a good chance that one will be coming from your neck of the woods. We can't guarantee that there will be space available, but you should try asking for a lift from fellow attendees.

Also, if you're travelling from around the country and are looking to reduce costs, offering a lift to another attendee or sharing the journey is a great way to bring down the cost of travelling.

Venue

Where do I sleep?

At each LAN, there is a dedicated sleeping area where you may set up and air-bed/mat/camp-bed for you to rest inbetween epic gaming sessions.

You'll need to bring your own sleeping equipment, but remember, no matter what time of day it is, there may be others sleeping - so keep noise to a minimum when you're in the sleeping area.

I have a disability, what facilities are provided?

GameOn are limited in their facilities by the locations that we hire. Simple tasks such as assistance with moving equipment can be easily arranged, but facilities such as wheelchair ramps vary from site to site.

If you wish to attend a LAN but are concerned we may not offer what you require, we recommend contacting us to discuss your requirements and we can inform you if it's something we can assist with.

Payment

Can I pay on the door?

Unfortunately, GameOn cannot accept payment on the door, due to the nature of needing to know in advance the number of players and spectators that are going to be in attendence.

If you're having difficulty paying, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Note: This may change in future, but spaces can not be guaranteed when turning up on the day.

I don't like/want/use PayPal, how else can I pay?

You can pay via direct bank transfer if you like, please get in touch to organise.

Note: The Earlybird discount is not available when paying by bank transfer.

What is the Earlybird discount?

The Earlybird discount is a period in which a full player ticket cost is reduced for those purchasing their tickets before a certain date before the event takes place.

Can I pay for friends/dependents?

Yes. Have them book their place, then find their entry in the "Unpaid Players" table. There's a button to pay for each player there.

I can no longer make it, how do I get a refund?

You'll need to contact one of the GameOn administrators in order to request removal from the event booking and a refund. Please note that refunds are subject to a fee to cover administration costs and prevent abuse of the booking system. Fees may be waived at the administrators discretion. Refunds are not available within three days of the event taking place.

Special Circumstances

Refunds will be processed in full under the following circumstances:

  • GameOn cancels the event completely
  • GameOn change the dates of the event, meaning you can no longer make it

In this case, please contact a GameOn administrator.
