The Source Filmmaker is creating quite a stir now that is has came out of closed beta, with community created videos springing up on Youtube, Reddit and other Internet hideaways which are entertaining millions of people; but what exactly is the Source Filmmaker?
The software has been developed by Valve over a number of years with the assistance of multiple Film industry professionals to create something that can run on our humble gaming rigs at home. Built within the Source engine, it condenses the entire pipe line of an animation studio onto one PC. You may have seen the end results of this Filmmaker already in the "Meet The" Team Fortress 2 collection along with pretty much any animated cut-scene, intro and promotional video for any Source game you may have played or seen.
Now this software allows us to create our own scenes, with a GPU powered facial motion system allowing the user to display subtle facial animations in order to convey emotions along with utilising a feature film quality lip-sync system. In numpty terms, you can create your own scenes, animate the characters in a way you see fit and even have them talking with a realistic lip-sync as they rattle off your script.
The best part of this? It's absolutely free, available right now on Steam. So those videos that the community have made already? Well here's a small selection of our favourites some of which are NSFW so be warned. Let us know if you've made one by posting us the link to the video or suggest your favourites too.
