Nvidia Shield & Controller Preview

Nvidia Shield & Controller Preview

The Nvidia Shield is a device that aims to put high quality gaming at your fingertips, wherever you are. By creating a powerful tablet capable of playing a wide variety of games as standard, and connecting to a more powerful PC for those that require it, Nvidia have created a device that allows you to keep gaming even when you're on the move. However, it can also be used as a standard Android tablet for when you need to check your email.

It also connects to Nvidia's GRID service, allowing you to stream games to your device when you're unable to stream them from your PC as long as you have an internet connection that can support it. You can also hook the tablet up to your TV via the HDMI port on the device.

The optional controller to the tablet is a solid build, and feels comfortable to hold. Buttons are similarly placed to those you’d find on the Xbox and PlayStation controllers, so nothing should feel alien to new users. It uses a custom Wi-Fi Direct connection rather than Bluetooth, which improves latency and performance of the device.

The Shield can be had for around £239.99, with the controller coming in at £49.99. More information on these, as well as the upcoming Shield Console can be found on Nvidia’s dedicated Shield website.

You can only stream from your PC if you have a Nvida card?

is that correct?

Having been looking at a new graphics card recently, so I think I can answer that.

Yes - every Nvidia card I've seen on several websites all have a little box or section talking about how it can stream to the Shield.

Yeah - Shield is Nvidia's baby so to speak, so it's only available through their cards. There's alternatives available though, if you don't have a Nvidia card.
