Seeing as it’s the Halloween time of year, it’s no surprise that we were asked to review Spooky Treats, a spooky game based on a sweet-toothed youth.
The intro of Spooky Treats shows a normal boy named Harry, who can’t think of anything else but candy, but then he hears rumours of a mansion where they are overfilled with the most delicious candy anywhere, which over course gets Harry’s attention. It turns out that it’s more than just a candy mansion.
At first it seems simple enough, just tap about, change floors, collect candy, but then Harry finds out that the mansion is actually haunted! But that isn’t going to put Harry off the thought of a mountain of candy. You can hide behind them, hide under a table, or just stay well away from them. Either way, you ARE going to get that candy!
The controls are very easy and responsive, which, of course, is a must have for any iPad game. It’s simple enough that you just need to tap the screen to choose where Harry walks, tapping a door to make Harry walk through it and change floors. Just walking through candy will pick it up for you, meaning you don’t need to tap it consecutively to pick it up. And of course the awesome way you can just sneak right behind that Grim Reaper just for that Candy Cane at the other side of the room.
There’s a wide range of different monsters that Harry may encounter, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. None of them can be defeated; you just have to avoid them. You can encounter all sorts of spooky creatures, such as the Grim Reaper, as mentioned above, that can suddenly turn around, which can be very bad if you’re trying to be ‘Harry the Ninja’, or you can get the Zombie, which is very slow, or Dracula, which can suddenly turn into a bat and increase speed, or the ghost, which doesn’t use doors, but just sinks or rises through the floor. These different monsters that can appear everywhere are what adds the real challenge to this game.
One of the best features about this game is the fact that it’s non-violent and family friendly, so anyone can pick it up and play it at anytime, anywhere. The soundtrack that plays in the background is also that of a cheerful one, which can put you in the mood for a bit of simple, yet enjoyable fun.
The levels are also something that should be applauded. The fact how it can be any angle, round, long ways or up ways, it can get interesting trying to guess what’s coming up. Also the ‘bonus’ levels, which is a completely different experience, such as matching pairs of candy, or playing ‘colourblind’ where all the doors are the same colour so you have no idea where you’ll pop up after entering a door.
Overall it’s a fun, enjoyable game that is good for the whole family, and with it being free, and responsive, with a fun gameplay style, it’s definitely worth getting hold of this Spooky little Treat.
