EA Subscription-Based Service to Start on Xbox One

EA Subscription-Based Service to Start on Xbox One

EA have announced that they will be soon beginning a subscription-based service much akin to Microsoft's Games for Gold and Sony's PlayStation Plus services.

It will cost £3.99 / $4.99 a month, or $29.99 per year, for a subscription to EA Access. It will give you early trial access to EA titles five days before they come out, with the ability to continue your save game should you purchase it. There are some games already on the slate for early access: Madden NFL 15NHL 15FIFA 15NBA Live 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition

You will also get discounts to full games and DLC, as well as free-with-membership games. However as the service is still technically in beta, it only has a few titles available: FIFA 14Madden NFL 25Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4.

Hidden at the bottom of the page, however, is the text:

Titanfall excluded from all EA Access features; Check this page often for EA Access updates and any future exclusions.

So not all Xbox One EA titles will be available through EA Access. Presumably this will have something to with exclusive titles, which Microsoft are usually very strict about.

It will be available "soon" for North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and you can purchase a subscription from your Xbox One or several retailers.

It will not be available on PS4, and when reached out to about this, a Sony representative told  Game Informer they had evaluated it:

We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.

Whether this is because it could dip into their profits for their upcoming videogame streaming service PlayStation Now, or whether they legitimately want to protect users from what they see as a bad idea, is up for debate.

However, they also tout the fact that PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the PlayStation 4 launched. A fact which is likely more to do with the inability to play online on the PS4 without a Plus membership, than the free-with-membership games.
