GAME Joins Forces With Multiplay

GAME Joins Forces With Multiplay

UK retailer GAME, has today announced the acquisition of Multiplay, the community-based games company focused on live events, online gaming services and eSports.

GAME’s partnership with Multiplay will create a unique platform to significantly expand and enhance community-events and eSports programme.

The partnership will build on the programme of community events and engagement activities already provided by GAME, offering alternative retail experiences for customers.

Martyn Gibbs, Chief Executive of GAME Digital, said:

“Like Multiplay, we put our communities at the heart of our business. Together we will be able to move even faster to grow and develop our services for both gamers and suppliers in the UK, Spain and around the world.

“With our combined passion and expertise, we are looking forward to delivering more, bigger and better experiences for our communities and are excited for what the future holds.”

Last year alone, over 4,000 gamers participated at one of GAME’s 280 lock-ins, whilst over 150,000 attended more than 3,000 midnight launches held across the country. Multiplay's leading event, Insomnia, also saw numbers rise with more than 67,000 people attending in person and more than 45 million interactions across Twitch, YouTube and Flickr in 2014. With today's announcement, those numbers will be expected to rise yet again.

Insomnia 2015 will take place between 3rd - 6th April. Tickets are available from the Multiplay's Insomnia website here.

This will be interesting to see where GAME take it from here. For the last year or so they have been trying to be more community based with lock-ins and more social media interaction but this is a big step!

Oh, and I'd like to point out that I wrote this article back in 2012: http://www.gamegrin.com/articles/staff-blog-games-retail-future/

Clearly I am owed some sort of royalties or something.

That's some fine time-travelling you've done there mate! In all fairness, this seem look a good acquisition. You say theyve been holding social events, but I wouldn't know about them at all. Undoubtedly they'll need to start pushing them and marketing the shit out of upcoming ones.
