HTC and Valve partner on Steam VR Headset "Vive"

Valve Corporation and HTC are partnering to develop Vive, a VR headset that's due out at the end of this year.

The announcement comes ahead of next week's GDC, where the companies promise to have a strong presence. So far, the specs look impressive: two 1080x1200px screens, 90 fps, and a promise to track players' movements around a space of up to 15 square feet, allowing them to move around naturally in a VR environment.

According to HTC, partnering with Valve has given them the chance to use SteamVR and the future promise of widely accessibly VR-ready games. Vive is apparently also already partnered with Fireproof Games, Dovetail Games and Cloudhead Games, as well entertainment companies like Lionsgate, HBO as well as others.

And perhaps more importantly, HTC and Valve have something to show for their hype. While consumer copies are scheduled to hit shelves at the end of the year, developer editions are scheduled for this Spring, and the companies are already beggining the pre-order process.

Specs wise it'll be more advance than Oculus, but it's all about price and support at the end of day. Rumours are Nvidia are working on their own too and then there's Razer's. It going to get silly if there's to many on the market.

Calmine - It's like the tablet market. There's hundreds of different types and brands. Thing is, there's the front runners: Apple, Google, Samsung.

DIdn't think of it like that. What I sort of mean't was. I just hope that developers don't get paid or design their games to only specifically work certain VR headsets. That's where it would cause a nuisance.

Man, I can't wait to get my hands on a VR headset. Still haven't had a chance to try one yet.
