Nintendo NX is a Portable Console

Nintendo NX is a Portable Console

Sources have revealed to Eurogamer, that Nintendo's next generation console, the NX is a portable console with detachable controllers.

The reveal is surprising and if true, it looks like Nintendo are going into intuitive new direction by combining the power of a home console with the portability of a handheld. Not only that, the device will also feature two detachable controllers and support to connect the device to your TV.

But wait there's more. If the sources are correct, then we could also see the return of cartridges as it's proprietary form of media. Other details include aside from the design: a brand-new operating system and the use of Nvidia's Tegra X1 chipset.

The Nvidia Tegra chip, which is designed for mobile device such as the Nvidia Shield and Google's Nexus Pixel C, is apparently what's powering the device in development kits, but that could change. However right now, it does give us an idea of performance.

With the decision of going to a mobile chip, the performance won't be comparable to the Xbox One or the PS4, but it will certainly be more power than the Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo's own Wii U. Again, Nintendo aren't going for graphics, they're focusing on games and portability.

The release is still rumoured to be March, 2017 with announcement later this year. So if the sources are true, then this could very well be Nintendo's future of handhelds. After all, why not both?
