Oculus Rift Requirements Released

Oculus Rift Requirements Released

Oculus are readying up for the release of their consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. With it comes recommended requirements for users. Brace yourselves! The requirements are as follows:

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM

And on top of that you'll needing:

  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • HDMI 1.3

Now, these are hefty requirements, but keep in mind that these are the recommended requirements to get the full Oculus Rift experience. The consumer model of the Rift will run at 2160x1200 resolution at 90Hz over two displays. Which as Atman Binstock, Oculus chief architect, explains -

"This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering"

While the requirements are high, Binstock went on to explain that -

"The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience on this configuration by default. We believe this “it just works” experience will be fundamental to VR’s success, given that an underperforming system will fail to deliver comfortable presence"

In turn, this means bad news for laptop users, as discreet mobile chips are not supported...yet. The reason is that GPU's within laptops, even in powerful high-end machines output their external displays using hardware and software that are simply not supported by the Rift.

If you can't wait for the Oculus Rift and don't have the system for it, your going have to spend big bucks on a new machine. Still, it might just be worth to experience the power of VR to it's fullest. For more Oculus Rift, check out their blog here

Oculus Rift is scheduled for release during the first quarter of 2016, no price has been announced as of yet.
