The Hyperkin Smart Boy Plays Actual Game Boy Carts on Your Smartphone

The Hyperkin Smart Boy Plays Actual Game Boy Carts on Your Smartphone

Android owners have plenty of sources of old games available to them. There's loads of re-releases and remakes on Google's Play Store, and of course there are loads of emulators available on the system. One thing that you can't do though, it take your existing retro games and play them directly through the console. Thankfully, Hyperkin are coming to the rescue with the Smart Boy, to make this a reality.

The Smart Boy is a clip on unit that attaches to your android phone and plays Game Boy games. These aren't emulated though, the device has a cartridge slot so you can play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games right on your Android device. Hyperkin claim that their unit should support all 1,600+ titles out of the box. With a built in rechargeable battery in the Smart Boy itself, it won't run down your phone's battery either, unless you choose to use the optional feature of charging the unit from your phone.

The device is set to be available later this year, and Doncaster based online retailer Funstockretro.co.uk are currently taking pre-orders for the device. There's no word on a price yet, but we should find that out closer to the unit's expected December launch.
