Yes, A Fruit Ninja Movie Really is Being Made
It seems that there's very little in the world of videogames that doesn't get turned into a film these days. With Angry Birds and Warcraft both taking home nine-figure sums at the box office this year, you can see why, it's a lucrative business if you get the right franchise.
New Line, distributor of such classics as The Lord of the Rings series, Rush Hour, and the 1936 classic Reefer Madness, are hoping to also cash in as they have picked up the rights to make a film based on one of the most popular mobile games, Fruit Ninja. The game, which has racked up somewhere between 300 million and a billion downloads, depending on who you ask, was at one point installed on a third of all iPhones in the US. But will hacking up pieces of fruit be a hit with movie-goers?
The film is being written by Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin, the duo who are behind a currently in-production film called How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack. They previously worked together on the Fox TV Show Anchorwoman, which managed to air one episode before being cancelled.
The game doesn't have a hugely in-depth story, so Damiani and Lavin have been tasked with creating a family comedy set within the universe of the game. It's expected to enter production sometime next year.
