Five PlayStation 4 Games That Need a PS5 Patch

Five PlayStation 4 Games That Need a PS5 Patch

With the recent news that Dying Light will be receiving a patch to run better on PlayStation 5, it got me browsing through my catalogue of games and wondering “Which of these would I love to see get that 4K/60fps boost?”

But what does that actually mean? This feature improves the performance of backwards compatible PlayStation 4 titles by upping the resolution and increasing the frame rate, making the game look sharper and run smoother. Now, some of these games look and play brilliantly already, but a bit of an extra boost is never a bad thing.

As if my backlog wasn’t big enough, here are a few games I would love to fire up again on the PS5:

Alien: Isolation

Well it is spooky season, so let’s kick things off with an appropriate game, shall we?
Alien: Isolation is a first-person horror game with quite possibly the best atmosphere and aesthetics I’ve ever seen in a game. It perfectly captures the spirit of the original film and makes the unpredictable Xenomorph a genuinely frightening enemy that learns from the way you play the game. Hide underneath a table one too many times? You best believe old two-mouths will find you. Fast.

With the current PS4 version running at 1080p and locked to 30fps, the potential boost to 4K & 60fps to match the PC version would be noticeable, especially with the game’s art direction. Add in the option to enable 3D audio and you’d have a perfect game to keep you on the edge of your seat!

The Yakuza Series

Okay, this is cheating slightly, but I couldn’t just pick one game out of this fantastically strange series.

The Yakuza games started out on the PlayStation 2, with main man Kazuma Kiryu embroiled in a crime story taking him all over the city of Kamurocho. The games grew from there, with added locations, new side activities and a whole host of improvements. But most importantly, the best video game rendition of karaoke you will ever see.

So PlayStation 5 patches then? Not a simple task for seven games- especially with games 3, 4, and 5 already being upgrades of the PlayStation 3 originals- but wandering the neon-soaked streets of Kamurocho in crisp 4K would be a dream. Yes, the Remastered Collection (Yakuza 3, 4, and 5) are already capped at 60fps on PS4, but a graphical enhancement would be met with open arms.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Released back in 2018, this medieval simulator/action-RPG hybrid absolutely gripped me during my first playthrough. A tough game to describe without going into too much detail, but think Skyrim grounded in reality, with a heavy dose of Mount & Blade for good measure. You’re not the hero that saves the land from an evil blight or single-handedly crushes an advancing army, but a blacksmith's son, Henry, who’s just trying to survive this world by any means necessary.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance would benefit from a PS5 patch mainly due to its frustratingly long loading times. The game is a looker, no doubt about it, but having to sit through two and a half minutes of loading screens when I load into a game, coupled with the frequent black loading screens in-game is something the PS5 could eradicate entirely. Once again, a 4K resolution boost and that all-important 60fps would be enough to get me to venture into the Kingdom of Bohemia for a second time.

Fallout 4

War. War never changes. Unless it’s improved via a PS5 boost! There isn’t much to say about Fallout 4 that you probably haven’t heard a hundred times already, it is an absolutely huge game with a list of quests long enough to keep you busy for months.

It’s a well known fact that Fallout 4 has issues with crashing; by that I mean it crashes a lot. Would a game-boosting patch resolve that? Probably not, it is Bethesda after all, but more than likely it will reduce the amount of frame dips during the more hectic scenes. I’ve even had the game reduced to a painfully slow crawl when entering a building, even if there isn’t anything happening.

The game runs at a smooth 60fps on Xbox Series X consoles, although with Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda earlier this year, I’m not holding out much hope for a patch on Sony’s great white behemoth.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Honestly, six years on and this game still looks stunning. Arguably not as well received as the former games in the series, it’s still one of my favourite superhero games ever created. I even loved the Batmobile sections (apart from the Riddler races!) which were met with some frustration amongst fans.

Capped at 30fps with a 1080p resolution, Batman: Arkham Knight has very few framerate drops, which may have you thinking “Well why have you put it on your list?” The answer is simple: it’ll look a bit prettier. Not good enough? Okay, there are frame rate dips here and there, as well as screen tearing during busier parts of the game such as the driving sections. Certainly, the biggest winner here would be the freeflow combat in 60fps, giving it that extra smoothness for bringing those Gotham goons to justice.

There are so many more games I could list, but that’s it from me for now! I’d love to hear your opinions on which games you think should be patched to run better on PlayStation 5.
