Steam Summer Sale 2014: Games To Look Out For

Steam Summer Sale 2014: Games To Look Out For

Here we are again. Summer is upon us: the birds will be flying high in the blue sky, people will be heading to the beaches and PC gamers are going to be sat in front of their monitors waiting for the best bargains in all of gaming. You could say it’s not the most seasonal of traditions, but when you can get amazing games for up to 75% off nobody’s going to give a damn.

Yes the Steam Summer Sale is almost here, running from the 19th to the 28th of June with an encore that’ll extend the sale to the 30th. That’s a lot of days, so expect a ridiculous number of cheap games and bundles. Here at GameGrin we understand the difficulties of the Steam Summer Sale and while we can’t help you with your credit score, we can point you in the direction of some great games to look out for.

Below is a collection of games that we expect will be discounted at some point during this year’s Steam Summer Sale, some will have links if you want to read our review of the game:

Day Z:

This could well be the year Early Access and the Summer Sale join hands in a most unholy matrimony. The prices for many Early Access titles have often been called into question, particularly those which charge for a full-priced game long before completion. The standalone Day Z, as one of the headline titles of Steam’s programme, is quite likely to receive a discount. We’ve seen it happen many a time with the original mod, so keep your eye on this.

With no FIFA available on PC, we wouldn’t be shocked to see the next best thing massively discounted to accompany the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The Football Manager franchise has a long history of sales on Steam, so a large price reduction isn’t out of the question. Look out for Pro Evo as well.

A new Rainbow Six game was hogging a lot of the spotlight at E3 this year, and with The Division also making the rounds, expect to see a host of Tom Clancy games on the cheap. Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six Vegas, Ghost Recon, all great games that should be experienced if you haven’t already. Then there’s H.A.W.X or maybe even Endwar if you’re not a shooter fan. A big bundle containing every Tom Clancy game wouldn't be a total surprise.

Civilization V:

Spotting a trend yet? Yes, there’s a big new Civilization on the horizon which means a healthy discount for Civ V is very likely. As one of the best examples of turn-based strategy on the Steam store right now you’d be a fool for not giving this a go, especially if you’re a fan of strategy gaming. Plus, those who own the base game will probably get a chance to pick up the DLC that they’ve yet to try.

Goat Simulator:

Last year, Surgeon Simulator 2013 took the spotlight as the ‘silly game’ of the sale. There can be no question over this year’s equivalent. The team behind Goat Simulator are a wacky bunch, as proven in their trailers and patch notes, so a price INcrease is probably more likely from this lot. Hopefully not though, with split-screen and other features incoming, we’d be surprised not to see Goat Simulator’s RRP cut in half.

Payday 2:

Look, we know you might be bored of it by now, but there are probably a few people out there who don’t already own Payday 2. The same thing goes for Portal 2, really. Expect a huge discount, although with PS4 and Xbox One versions recently announced, there’s little chance of Payday 2 going for free.

Company of Heroes 2:

With a shiny new DLC pack releasing during the sale, there’s not a better time to discount Company of Heroes 2. As with Total War: Rome 2, there’s also a truckload of DLC available which will undoubtedly also be on offer. Considering some of the ridiculous prices those packs are currently available for, it’ll definitely be worth watching if you already own the game.

South Park: The Stick of Truth:

Ubisoft has a good history with the Steam Summer Sale, so expect to see some of their biggest names on offer, including Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. As a big one day deal, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the recent South Park RPG receive a friendly price cut. For those who were undecided when the game released a few months back, it could be the prompt needed to give in and buy it.
