The Most Disappointing Games Ever Created

There is nothing quite like the excitement that surrounds a new game release day. Dedicated gamers will typically have their favourite genres and franchises, and waiting for the latest instalment can reach a fever pitch.

Because of this, if a game fails to live up to the hype it can cause a lot of disappointment and people are not shy in voicing their opinions. Social media, chat rooms, streaming platforms, and reviews by critics can all seriously impact the performance of a game.

With so much choice now available to gamers, developers have to get things right. The online gaming industry has seen a surge in free-to-play games, so consumers are far less likely to spend their money on games that aren't living up to the hype.

The industry is also in competition from the online casino industry with an exciting array of traditional and modern games where players can win real money.

Online gambling expert Ricky Davies discusses the benefits of online poker not on Gamstop. Gamstop is a voluntary self-exclusion program that all licensed UK online casinos must sign up for, but offshore alternatives can provide bigger bonuses, more game choices, and fewer restrictions.

With stiff competition, games can't afford to fail, but there are some that have disappointed over the years. Below, we take a look at some of the biggest flops and failures in gaming.

  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5
  • Battlefield 2042
  • Anthem
  • Football Manager 2015
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Mass Effect Andromeda

The Mass Effect franchise had already enjoyed a lot of popularity among gamers, and the prospect of a new instalment after five years helped to build excitement about its release.

Sadly, the poor animation, terrible dialogue, and frustrating bugs resulted in a massive letdown. Players who gave it a chance found the lack of depth or interesting characters disappointing.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The Lord of the Rings is massive among book readers and movie fans, and it makes sense that an immersive gaming experience would provide the opportunity for people to live out their hobbit dreams.

While there are some great games that do exactly this, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is not one of them. The game was brought to market with glitches, poor aesthetics, and did not offer very good value for money.

Gollum/Smeagol is one of the most enduring characters from Tolkien's fantasy world, but this game does not do him justice.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

The good news about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is that it lived up to the same hype as the Suicide Squad movie. The bad news is that the movie was terrible too.

The main issue with this live service effort was the lack of effort that went into the missions. They ended up being boring and with bugs and network issues, the game turned into a massive disappointment for Warner Bros, Rocksteady, and fans.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games were the perfect tribute to a skating god, but Pro Skater 5 soured the franchise. As the property deal neared its end, Activision rushed this effort to market, and it was obvious.

The gameplay did not live up to previous releases and resulted in an awful performance which jeopardised the future of the games.

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 5 was a slight disappointment so fans expected developers to go all out with Battlefield 2042 to raise it back up to its usual high standards. The beta version caused some concern after reports of development issues, but fans still had high hopes that it could be turned around.

Sadly, the game did not get better and map designs, scoreboard, visuals, and the decision to remove the class system were met with fury. This resulted in some of the poorest platform performance in history.

Anthem

Electronic Arts and BioWare teamed together to create a game featuring an Iron Man-style robot suit, giving players the opportunity to blast enemies from all angles.

Unbelievably, they contrived to turn this into a boring loop of a game with no direction. The game was abandoned after release, with planned updates no longer going ahead, much to the disappointment of those who had already shelled out a lot of money for the game.

Football Manager 2015

The Football Manager franchise, has gained a cult following among football fans who spend hours on end buying, selling, training, and leading teams from around the world.

New games every season not only update team squads but also include improvements and additional features. The 2015 edition is widely regarded as the most disappointing with press conferences and scouting being drawn-out processes that slowed the gameplay.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

In 1982, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial took the world by storm and all types of merch including toys, posters, and clothing were suddenly everywhere. The videogame release of E.T. the Atari has now gained notoriety despite commercial success.

The visuals and gameplay left a lot to be desired and it was clear the game was rushed to make the most of the movie hype. Eventually, the unsold copies famously found their way to a landfill.

Conclusion

Games will always have their critics, and you can’t please all the people all of the time. However, there are some games that are recognised as being massive disappointments by the vast majority, and the ones listed above are some of the best examples.
