The Rise in the Mobile Gaming Market

The evolution of gaming has always been an extremely interesting one. Despite the fact that videogames are even now still a relatively new breed of entertainment media in comparison to film and television, it has still managed to fast become one of the most diverse and interchangeable mediums on the market today.

With the introduction of ever-changing smartphone, tablet and phablet technology it meant yet another variety of platforms for which gaming developers could suddenly further extend their technical prowess and bring new and exciting gaming experiences to the masses. Now, incredibly, it’s predicted that the mobile gaming market itself will actually eclipse that of console gaming by 2018.

Gaming software revenue overall is expected to increase from $88 billion and slowly grow by 8% annually over the next few years until it hits a massive $110 billion plus by the year 2018. The mobile gaming sector is expected to lead this growth more than any other area of gaming with smartphone and tablet based games already looking set to beat that of its console-based rivals.

It’s incredible to think how far the mobile gaming market has come in such a short period of time. The development of the mobile market and the introduction of faster and better smartphone technology have helped this unexpected and exponential growth. The platforms have offered developers a great deal more flexibility for them to not only conceive and create but also allowing them to publish and get their games onto Apple iOS and Android stores so much more easily. This, coupled with the low cost and easy-access setup for smartphone device owners to buy and install these games, has led to a huge increase in market share. It has helped open the doors to new gamers of all ages and from all walks of life who may have never picked up so much as a joystick in their lives previously.

The rise can also be attributed to the increase in mobile casino apps, sportsbook applications and other popular betting and gambling based hits. Now with smartwatches becoming the next big thing in mobile and wearable innovations gaming will surely once more evolve with it.

Next generation consoles have a lot to do in order to pull back their audiences and make sure that future generations of gamers aren’t lost to the mobile age. Whether this means dropping the cost of their games or creating fresh and more technologically advanced add-ons to entice players further we’re not entirely sure but we welcome a battle between them all.
