The Top 5 Game of Thrones Videogames of All Time

It might be hard to believe, but the first episode of Game of Thrones aired 10 years ago last week. The King’s Road pilot first introduced us to Ned Stark, Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and a multitude of other well-fleshed out characters. Although the final season aired in 2019 (to the disappointment of most Thrones fans), the show lives on in the shape of dozens of videogames, each of varying quality. Which are the best five of these Game of Thrones titles to play? Let’s take a look.

Reigns: Game of Thrones

This “swipe ‘em up” sequel to Reigns and Reigns: Her Majesty makes full use of the simple but adorable graphics which make this style of game so easy to play across all devices. Each decision you make leads to rises and falls of your character’s status in Westeros, and as you progress through the game, you unlock different characters from the show, some important, some lesser known. It’s still the best mobile GoT game on the market.

Game of Thrones 243 Ways
The only online slot that made the top five, Game of Thrones 243 Ways (referring to its number of potential paylines) was released in 2014, featuring the houses from the first couple of seasons. The symbols are made up of the Baratheon, Stark, Lannister, and Targaryen banners, and developers Microgaming have chosen the Iron Throne itself as the highest pay. Although it’s harder to find than it once was, you can still play this one at Mr Green casino, and it’s as fun now as it was when it came out.

Telltale’s Game of Thrones

Telltale Games are known for their CYOA style, and this GoT version shows the genre at its best. The writers have focused on the greatest strength of the books i.e., the dialogue, and have even hired some of the show’s actors to voice the script. You can hear Ramsay Bolton’s dulcet (yet threatening) tones as you drive House Forrester on to glory. This minor House pops up everywhere from the Red Wedding to the death of Joffrey.

Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall

Set in the GoT universe, but not in the actual narrative featured on the show, Beyond the Wall is a turn-based game with top-notch graphics. The plot explores the story of the Bloodraven (Brynden Rivers), who has gone missing north of the Wall, and your character is tasked with tracking him down. Characters can level up in abilities as you progress through the game, and the battle scenes are truly intense. Best of all, Beyond the Wall manages to impress even on mobile.

Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming

An official RPG strategy game made by HBO, Winter is Coming is the kind of immersive, massive multiplayer experience which GoT fans deserve. Whatever your starting character, the end goal is the same – to sit on the Iron Throne. The graphics look particularly good during the battle scenes, although the sheer scale of these battles means they are best appreciated on desktop.

Game of Thrones continues to fascinate fans, who mostly choose to focus on the clever dialogue and compelling characters of the first few seasons, before it all became Tits and Dragons. Thankfully, the best GoT games focus on this aspect of the show, and if you haven’t tried out some of the titles above, we recommend giving them a go.
