World of Warcraft Reputation Beginner’s Guide

Gaining Reputation in World of Warcraft and advancing through each Faction’s Reputation levels is similar in many ways to gaining experience for character levels. Reputation points, just like experience points, are gained through quests and killing specific enemies, and like experience, the required amount of Rep you need to progress increases as you advance.

Every character starts as a member of the home Faction of their race. As you progress through the game, you’ll meet members from other allied Factions with whom you will be able to gain Rep to access discounted prices when trading with each specific Faction’s vendors.

Why Grind Rep?

Aside from your home Faction, you can gain Reputation with many different Factions from your allies, neutral actions, and from the game’s expansions to gain access to different benefits. For example, while you automatically gain access to your home Faction’s mounts at level 40, you need to achieve an Exalted Reputation with any other Faction to be able to access their mounts and mount training. Apart from these bonuses, progressing your character’s Reputation with different Factions will unlock achievements.

The main reason to grind more Exalted Reputations with Factions from previous expansions is for the rewards that come with each Achievement. Apart from the mounts, you gain access to with every Exalted Reputation you attain, once you reach Exalted Rep with 40 Factions you gain the title “the Exalted”, with 60 Factions, you get the title “the Beloved” and the “Esteemed” title, plus the Pureheart Courser Unicorn mount at 100 Factions. This mount, like other unicorn mounts, is able to fly in the latest Shadowlands expansion.

Ways to Increase Reputation

The higher your Reputation level, the more difficult it will be for you to increase it further, not only because you will need more points, but also because certain activities only award Reputation points up to specific Reputation levels, so you’ll have to combine different activities when grinding Reputation to reach Exalted. If you’ve hit a wall, you can get a WoW Reputation Carry to help you grind Reputation faster.

Faction-Specific Quests

During your travels, you’ll occasionally come across quest givers from other Factions. Completing any quest will grant you a fixed amount of Reputation points with the quest giver's Faction. Many Factions also have quest givers that can give you special quests that can be completed repeatedly to gain Reputation.

Most quests award, in addition to Reputation points for the quest giver’s Faction, “Spillover” Reputation points equal to 25% of that gained for the quest giver’s Faction for all allied Factions. "Spillover" reputation gain is limited to 5999/6000 points progression through the "Friendly '' Reputation level.

Defeating Certain Mobs and Specific Bosses

Each Faction will have certain mobs that give Reputation when killed, but killing mobs only awards Reputation points to a certain extent, usually only until Revered. To get to Exalted, you can only get experience from defeating bosses and other methods.

Championing Tabards

Equipping a Championing tabard awards Reputation while completing dungeons at your level or at the level indicated on the tabard. When you have a Reputation level of at least Friendly with any home faction, and also with certain Northrend Factions, you can purchase tabards from those factions’ quartermasters.

Collecting tabards can also be a reason for leveling your Rep with old factions for many completionist players.

Writs

Reputation is also gained by turning in Writs for certain factions, which are acquired as rewards from completing Argent Tournament quests or purchased at the Molten Front in the Firelands.

Reputation Grinding Tips

For better play, make sure to follow these recommendations.

Get Organized

There is an ad on called Pretty Reps that will track finished Reputations across characters and combine them all into a kind of universal Rep sheet to show you which Reps you still need to get to Exalted and which you already have, even if you’ve completed it on an Alt you aren’t using.

Use Reputation Buffs

Grind Rep Human character if you can since you get an immediate 10% boost to Reputation gained. Also, check for the Darkmoon Faire, since it also offers a 10% Reputation buff for a whole week, starting from the 1st Sunday of every month. To get this buff, head to the fair and ride the carousel to gain the “WHEE!” buff. The buff only lasts an hour, so you’ll either have to return to the Faire every hour, or you can buy Darkmoon Top Hats for 10 Darkmoon prize tickets each to reapply your Rep buff out in the field.

There are also Reputation buffs from the Battle Standard of Coordination guild battle standard for 15%, if your Guild has attained the Achievement for completing world quests, as well as from certain holidays like Hallow’s End and Pilgrim’s Bounty for 10%.

Compare Rep Farming With Timewalking

Before you start farming Rep for an older Faction, first find out if it is available with Timewalking, and if so, if that option is faster. Many of the older Reps can be increased with Timewalking Rep tokens; whenever there’s a Timewalking event for an old expansion, the Timewalking vendor will offer commendations for Factions from that expansion that will increase your Rep that you can buy for Timewarped badges.
