3DS Breaks 20 Million Sales in Japan
Nintendo's 3DS wasn't their most successful console at launch. With a price slash soon after arrival meaning they had to give a collection of games free to the early adopters and a fairly barren selection of launch titles, there were people predicting its demise within just a few months. Five years on though, its doing better than anyone expected.
Proving that there's still plenty of life in mobile gaming, the little 3D unit that could has now shipped 20.03 million units in Japan. This puts it above the PSP and not that far from Sony's PS2 which sold 21.98 before it was discontinued. To put this in context, the highest selling console in Japan is the original DS which sold a stonking 32.86 million units. That's roughly a quarter of the population of the country.
The figures were posted on forum Neo-Gaf, as sourced by user "Sammy Samusu". The numbers come from Famitsu, one of the most respected games journals in Japan. These numbers only apply to Japan, worldwide figures are not completely confirmed at present.
