Folding@Home Requesting the Help of Our PCs Against Coronavirus
Folding@Home has released a statement informing the public of how it is looking to understand and potentially fight COVID-19 (Coronavirus) with the computing power afforded by those using its software.
Folding@Home is a free program which uses the collective power of idle computers to simulate the protein structures of viruses and diseases in action—information that can help efforts in developing potential "therapeutic opportunities". The organisation works to research neurological diseases like Huntington's and Alzheimers; infectious diseases like Chagas disease and Coronavirus; as well as various cancers.
The computing power made available by the countless idle volunteered computers, like yours or mine, allows Folding@Home to observe snapshots of the protein structures of viruses like COVID-19. This can potentially help to pinpoint figurative 'chinks in the armour' that can be exploited by treatments. The more power at Folding@Home's disposal, the more calculations it can run and the more likely it is that positive breakthroughs will be made.
Downloading Folding@Home is completely free, and while it has always been for a good cause, the organisation's specific efforts to aid the current global situation warrant a reminder of its existence.
