Games Done Quick Announces Online-Only Event for Coronavirus Relief

Alongside the unfortunate announcement that this year's Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) event has been postponed from June to August, the speedrunning organisation has revealed a brand-new online-only event dedicated to Coronavirus relief. Corona Relief Done Quick (CRDQ) will take place from 17th - 19th April, with all proceeds going to Direct Relief, an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by emergencies or stuck in positions of poverty.

For the uninitiated, speedrunning is the practise of playing and completing a game as quick as humanely possible: whether by mastering precise timing; making use of glitches and exploits; or just being really, really good at the game in question. For many, speedruns are an art form; for others, they're a time-waste. No matter your opinion, however, they're certainly impressive to witness.

Games Done Quick, normally, is a biannual livestreamed event that unites the speedrunning community at a single convention centre. A week of non-stop speedruns ensues, with viewers and participants showing their appreciation by donating to that year's chosen charity. To date, GDQ events have raised over $25 million for various charities.

CRDQ will be a little different to traditional events of years past: there'll be no physical location this time—due to social distancing and the swift organisation of the event—and it won't last for quite as long, a weekend instead of an entire week. Regardless, the need for a sense of community and homebound situation most of us find ourselves in should see this bonus GDQ mini-marathon reach some fairly lofty viewer numbers.

CRDQ will run from 17th - 19th April.

Additionally SGDQ has been postponed and will now run from 16th - 23rd August in Bloomington, Indianapolis.
