Hero's Song Kickstarter Cancelled
It seems like it was only a few days ago that we were reporting on John Smedley's return to the gaming industry. To be fair, that's probably because it was. With a new company and big ideas for a new game, there was a lot of anticipation at what the veteran developer could bring to us with the formation of a new company and an in-house published game.
Just a few days after launching though, the campaign has been cancelled. Smedley and his team at Pixelmage Games were hoping to raise an ambitious $800,000 from the crowd-funding site but at the time of cancellation they had reached less than 20% of that goal and decided that the best thing to do was cancel the campaign after less than a week of fundraising.
In a statement on the website, Smedley stated that he felt mistakes were made due to this being the company's first Kickstarter campaign. As well as missing a great deal of physical goods to offer to potential backers, he felt that the campaign started with not enough gameplay to show off.
It's not doom-and-gloom for the title though. Although the Kickstarter funding has been canned, the game will still be made in the expected timeframe. Pixelmage have been able to raise funding from investors to complete their vision of releasing without any publisher money, meaning that the team will still maintain the degree of creative control that they so dearly wanted with this venture.
