Insomniac Games Has Been Purchased By Sony

Throughout the current console generation, Sony has built up a strong reputation for their numerous high quality exclusive titles such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and 2018’s God of War, with these titles instilling a sense of confidence within their fans and the games industry as a whole. Sony doesn’t appear to be resting on its laurels leading into the next generation of console gaming, with a recent acquisition seeing Insomniac Games joining Playstation’s Worldwide Studios.

Insomniac Games has had a long lasting and fruitful relationship with Sony over the years, developing numerous beloved franchises such as Spyro and Ratchet & Clank. Insomniac’s most recent title was the 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was a storming success receiving positive reviews and selling 13.2 million copies (as of the time of this article).

However Insomniac hasn’t only developed games for Sony’s systems. Earlier this generation, Insomniac released Sunset Overdrive, an open world Xbox One game with a focus on fluid movement and crazy weapons (the latter being somewhat of an Insomniac staple). Despite its relatively positive reception, it’s no secret that the game didn’t quite amass the same audience and recognition as some of Insomniac’s other franchises, making the Sony acquisition a logical next step for both companies.

Insomniac Games hasn’t revealed what its next project will be, but a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man for the next PlayStation console seems like a safe bet.

This almost felt inevitable considering how Insomniac made mostly PlayStation exclusive games.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. I guess the success of Spider-Man led Sony to dumping an even bigger truck full of money outside of Insomniac's HQ to try and acquire them.
