Mafia: Definitive Edition — First Look at the Remade Crime Classic

The "New Beginnings Trailer" for Mafia: Definitive Edition, Hangar 13's complete overhaul of 2002's cult classic Mafia, is out now. Meet protagonist Thomas Angelo and take a look at the game's new cinematic style in the trailer above. Releasing as part of the Mafia: Trilogy, Mafia: Definitive Edition will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 28th August.

Remade from the ground-up on the same engine that powered Mafia III, Mafia: Definitive Edition will retell the original game's story with expanded dialogue, cutscenes, gameplay sequences and "all-new features" (what this means specifically is ambiguous). Unlike the remaster of Mafia II (which is wrought with issues) or the mere re-release of Mafia III featured in this Trilogy bundle, Mafia: Definitive Edition looks to be the product of a real, concentrated effort to remake a dated but still worthwhile game. Here's hoping it releases without the performance issues that plague Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

As early access to the remaster and re-release of Mafia II and III are being served up as pre-order bonuses, it's clear that the first game is being treated as the 'meat' of the package. Considering how poorly Mafia II: Definitive Edition has been received and how little additional work has gone into Mafia III: Definitive Edition, perhaps it would have been beneficial for Hangar 13 to market the Trilogy package as such.

Mafia: Trilogy releases 28th August for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Pre-ordering the game will give players instant access to the Definitive Editions of both Mafia II and III.
