Nintendo President Talks About Adding More Systems to Switch Online

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was recently asked during Nintendo’s 79th annual shareholder meeting about expanding the games included in the Switch Online service beyond just NES titles.

Furukawa responded with “At this place we cannot tell new information about future classic hardware among others, but we are thinking about providing an extension of the online service which is currently providing Famicom [NES] software, as well as other methods of providing them. We also recognise that there are opinions wanting to play past titles”.

While the translation isn’t perfect, Nintendo as a company has clearly considered expanding the online service past its current relatively barebones offerings. The paid service has been met with harsh criticism since its launch during September of last year, with many stating that the online infrastructure is still far behind the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Fans have also been heavily requesting a Virtual Console equivalent for Nintendo Switch, which would give players options to buy specific games from old consoles.

While we still don’t have confirmation that more classic non-NES titles will be added to Nintendo Switch, it’s at least somewhat reassuring to see the prospect being openly discussed.
