Nintendo Switch Breaks 50 Million Units Sold
The Nintendo financial reports for the last three months of 2019 (ending 31st December) have been released, with the Nintendo Switch now sitting at 52.48 million total units sold. This means that the Nintendo Switch has now outsold the SNES, which sits at 49.1 million sold.
The system had a strong boost in sales at the end of the year, selling a mighty 10.84 million units in those three months alone. Some of the system’s success in recent sales can likely be partially attributed to the release of the cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite model late last year.
Software also sold well at 64.64 million units during that three month period. These strong sales have led Nintendo to increase their sales forecast for the Switch from 18 million units sold between April 2019-March 2020, to a total of 19.5 million sold.
As per usual the top 10 first-party Nintendo Switch games sales figures have also been released, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe expectedly sitting at the lead with 22.96 million copies sold. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate sits in second place with 17.68 million sold, while Super Mario Odyssey rounds out the top three at 16.59 million.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild widens the gap as the best selling game in the series with 16.34 million (not counting Wii U sales of the game). The recently released Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are nipping at its heels however, with 16.06 million copies sold between the two of them. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them overtake Breath of the Wild before the next financial report is released. The slightly less popular Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! sit in sixth place behind Sword and Shield with 11.76 million sold.
Rounding out the top 10 is Splatoon 2 with 9.82 million, Super Mario Party at 9.12 million, New Super Mario Bros. U with 5.85 million, and the recently released Luigi's Mansion 3 with a respectable 5.37 million.
Nintendo also threw in sales figures for a few other notable first-party titles, including last year’s critical darlings Super Mario Maker 2 which has 5.04 million sold, Fire Emblem Three Houses at 2.58 million, and Astral Chain with 1.03 million.
Despite being a remake of a Game Boy title, Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening found strong financial success with 4.19 million sold. Meanwhile Ring Fit Adventures and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 The Black Order each broke the million sale threshold with 2.17 million and 1.02 million units sold respectively.
