PlatinumGames Enters Partnership With Behemoth Company Tencent

Critically acclaimed developer PlatinumGames - known for titles such as Bayonetta and the recent Switch exclusive Astral Chain - has entered a surprise partnership with Chinese mega-corporation Tencent.

Tencent is known for its ownership of huge gaming brands such as League of Legends, as well as its partial ownership of Fortnite. The company also has ownership over other technologies and services such as online banking WeBank, and film distributor Tencent Pictures.

This may come as a surprise, with PlatinumGames being a relatively small studio compared to some gaming giants, despite their numerous critical darlings. PlatinumGames’ President and CEO Kenichi Sato assured the companies continued independence following this partnership, stating on the companies official website; “This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.”

Sato continues to explain the reasoning for the partnership; “We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.”

Currently PlatinumGames is working one four different titles, including Bayonetta 3, Babylon’s Fall, Lost Order and Granblue Fantasy: Relink. At the time of writing, none of these games have confirmed release dates.
