Playfield Widens the Digital Distribution Field

Playfield Widens the Digital Distribution Field

There's a reasonable chance that you haven't heard of Playfield before. Don't be ashamed, we hadn't either until recently. It's worth finding out about though. With over 2,000 games and direct interaction with developers, the growing digital distribution platform is trying its hardest to join the big leagues with Steam and GOG. The latest announcement of new features is just part of their long term plan to do just that.

The service, which now boasts almost 100,000 users, is getting a real-time recommendation engine, a content aggregation service, and connectivity with social media. The recommendation engine and social media connectivity pretty much speak for themselves, but content aggregation is a new concept. Essentially this will pool media from around the web pertinent to the games that you're interested in. So you can check a new game out on the store and if you're not sure then you can browse through reviews and Let's Plays to help sway your decision.

“We think of Playfield as a combination of a more modern improved Steam blended with a TripAdvisor for games,” Jiri Kupiainen, CEO, Shark Punch, said. “Discovery and the right information to make consumer choices are the biggest problem in a sea of games. Most storefronts are informed by sales data so players often miss gems; we are helping developers find their audiences based on player tastes and relevant information.”

This is interesting, given the frequency that Steam suggests games in genres I'd never touch with someone elses barge pole.
