There's cause to be cheerful at Sony, it seems, despite recent bad news as Sony CEO Kaz Hirai announced that the PlayStation 4 is already profitable on a hardware unit basis, providing a faster turn around time on returns than Sony's previous games consoles.
Speaking during a corporate strategy meeting Hirai told Sony executives that the console was already success in financial terms.
"It's been a hugely successful launch, but the key to the long term success of the platform lies in how solidly we can continue to grow the installed base, In terms of game titles for PS4, as of April 13, 47 titles had been launched with a total of 20.5 million units being sold via retailers and over the network on the PlayStation Store. From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses."
Despite Sony ending their recent fiscal year with a net loss of $1.26 billion, the console has helped increase sales and revenue by nearly 15 percent, with sales revenue up by 39% over the previous year thanks to the new hardware.
The PlayStation 4 has sold more than 7 million units worldwide since its April 6th release and has been the top selling console this generation so far with Sony making plans to launch both a game streaming service and a television streaming service.
