PlayStation 5 Event Has Been Rescheduled
Just over a week ago, the planned PlayStation 5 event was postponed from its initial 4th of June date to a new unspecified date in wake of the current protests surrounding the untimely death of George Floyd. A new 11th of June date has now been set, coming slightly sooner than some might have expected.
A PlayStation.Blog post from SIE CEO Jim Ryan seems to indicate that this event will be primarily focussing on games, stating;
“I’m excited to share that we will soon give you a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday. The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware.”

The event will run for a little bit over an hour, meaning that it should hopefully include a strong lineup of games. While we don’t know which titles will be turning up, there are a few educated guesses that can be made based on rumours, reports and previous announcements.
In terms of exclusives for the system, the long rumoured Demon’s Souls remake from Bluepoint Games seems like an easy bet. Demon’s Souls was the 2009 PlayStation 3 exclusive title that kicked off the now-iconic and highly revered Souls series, and helped make director Hidetaka Miyazaki one of modern gaming’s most respected creators.
A sequel to 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn has also been reported on, and three years seems like the perfect time to unveil the follow-up to one of PlayStation 4’s most commercially successful and critically acclaimed exclusives. Sequels to Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2018’s God of War are also likely in the works, but don’t expect to see more than a light teaser for them at the event, if anything at all.

Medieval fantasy action-RPG Project Awakening was announced all the way back in 2018 for PlayStation 4, so given the imminent release of PlayStation 5 it seems all but confirmed that it will be a cross-generational release. Developer Cygames has been quiet on the project for a while now, but hopefully this means they’re just waiting for an opportune time to show the game in-depth, and isn’t an indicator of some behind-the-scenes turmoil regarding development.
Lastly is the heavily rumoured Resident Evil 8 (or Resident Evil Village, as some sources refer to it). Given that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes were all revealed during Sony events, there seems to be an obvious pattern unfolding. If Capcom are planning annual releases for the Resident Evil franchise then this would be an opportune moment to unveil the next mainline entry.

At least one new IP at launch to showcase the power of the PlayStation 5 is a safe assumption too, but the specifics of what that IP would be or who would develop it is anyone’s guess.
The event will air live at 9pm BST/1pm PT.
