Project Starship X Exposes the Quirky Side of Cosmic Horror

There are a number of things one might associate with cosmic horror: nihilism, mortality, big terrifying squid monsters. It's not often, though, that the concept of comedy gets thrown in alongside such Lovecraftian themes. That's not going to stop Panda Indie Studio from mixing a whole bunch of "silly" into the cosmic Lovecraft stew with its upcoming roguelike space shoot 'em up Project Starship X. Check out the trailer above, and while you're at it, see if you can get a look at "Swagthulhu". Yes, really.

Between the outlandish take on classic Lovecraftian concepts, the absurd 16-bit character designs and the over-the-top powerups which could easily double as firework displays, there's enough going on in this trailer to keep even the most hyperactive attention span occupied. If you're the sort to not take things too seriously, this might be a shoot 'em up worthy of your time.

Project Starship X launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch on the 27th January. It's available now on PC.
