PS5 Teardown: Sony Releases 7 Minutes of Next-Gen Tech
PlayStation’s YouTube account uploaded a “PS5 Teardown” on their channel to give us a sneak preview of the PlayStation 5’s internal components.
The 7-minute video presented by Yasuhiro Ootori (Vice President of the Mechanical Design at Sony Interactive Entertainment) detailed the dismantling and subsequent explanations of each main hardware choices made by the PS5 hardware design team.
Ootori guides us on the removable faceplates and the stand that’s included with PS5, as so it can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Though it’s not the first time we’ve seen a console with a stand (see the original PlayStation 2’s optional stand), it is quite unique in that it seems mandatory for the system’s stability.
We also get a preview of the 825GB of Solid State Drive storage that’s embedded on the console’s motherboard, as well as the ability to expand the storage space with additional drives (M.2 interface PCIe 4.0 support).
An issue with the PS5’s predecessor (primarily the original PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro models) was how loud the console could be. This was due to the PS4’s cooling fan responding to the increasing temperature of the console as the vents were prone to become obstructed by dust or general poor ventilation.
It seems as though Sony has taken this seriously by implementing a 120mm double-sided air intake cooling fan, a custom heatsink of which could be comparable to a vapour chamber system, and ventilation exhausts across the top and along the back of the console.
The teardown video acts as a good example of why all these components have left the PS5 quite large in stature and size. Apparently, these strides for maintaining the consoles’ temperature and noise level have yielded great results - not only being a quiet and cool console, but one that can sustain that composure whilst operating intensive gameplay and next-gen loading times.
You can check out the full video above for a better look of the upcoming PlayStation 5.
