Riot Games Announces League of Legends WASD Movement Option and Rollout Plans
A few months ago, dataminers found information regarding a possible upcoming input option for League of Legends: WASD. While Riot Games' MOBA has had its own unique form of movement for 16 years in the form of right-click to move, it seems that it's looking to adopt what is the industry standard.
In the latest Dev Update uploaded to the official League of Legends YouTube channel, we get information about the upcoming WASD movement options that players will be able to take control of. Looking to make the game more accessible for newcomers, it'll be an optional input option to ensure that the MOBA complies with current industry standards.
The rollout for the WASD movement will be far slower than most other features arriving in League of Legends, as it's the biggest change the game has ever had in its years. Featuring massive advantages and disadvantages, it could shift the Summoner's Rift forever in a massive way.
In order to make the transition as smooth as possible, WASD will have an undetermined amount of time in the PBE (Public Beta Environment) while players get accustomed to it, and even past the initial rollout to live servers, it won't be enabled in Ranked for a while to ensure that the game remains as fair as possible. This is all in light of the massive ramifications that this could have in high- and low-ELO play, as the game has been built for over a decade with the complexities of click-to-move in mind.
