Rundown of PlayStation’s Spot at CES 2022

During an era in which PlayStation seems allergic to regularly updating anybody on pretty much anything that they are doing, they threw us some scraps to latch onto during the Sony segment at CES 2022. Nothing major was announced for PlayStation itself, which is to be expected as CES is more so about wider technology rather than gaming. However, we did get a sliver of information about the upcoming PS VR2.

The confirmed name was as long suspected: PlayStation VR2. Jim Ryan also revealed a bit more about both the headset (although not what it looked like) and the new controllers that we now know are called the Sense controllers. The new headset will come with upgraded features such as foveated rendering, 4K HDR and a 110 degree field of view. Ryan confidently stated that PS VR2 is next generation hardware, introducing more new features such as new sensory features, enhanced controls tracking, responsive feedback and eye tracking.

The brief update on the VR hardware itself was followed up by a short teaser on a new VR game built from the ground up for PS VR2. That game is Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a game set in the world of the critically acclaimed Horizon: Zero Dawn (and as of 18th February also Horizon: Forbidden West). The trailer shows the player travelling along a path while a Tallneck passes. Nothing was given away in terms of how the game would play, but it must be said that a standalone VR game set in one of the most beautiful videogame worlds that the industry has seen is without a doubt an interesting proposition at the very least.
