The week-long speedrunning marathon RPG Limit Break begins tomorrow, May 13 for a week of fast-flying, button-mashing, min/maxing, speedrunning antics.
For those who don't know, speedrunning involves a player attempting to complete a game (or a set goal within a game) as quickly as possible, often (but not always) while breaking the game in unique and entertaining ways. There is a whole community based around speedrunning with leaderboards and forums where participating players share tips and tricks despite the competitive nature of the past time.
RPG Limit Break is one of several marathon events for speedrunning held throughout the year - perhaps the most prolific being Games Done Quick, which holds events in January and June. As the name suggests, RPG Limit Break focuses on roleplaying games and this year's event features such favorites as Pokémon Crystal, several Final Fantasy games including VI, XIII: Lightning Returns, and XV, Kingdom Hearts (Dream Drop Distance and II: Final Mix), and more. A full schedule of games and expected runtimes can be found here.
Both RPG Limit Break and Games Done Quick raise money for charities, and this year's Limit Break marathon is raising money for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the marathon, which runs for a week, May 13 to May 19, is a perfect chance to give to that worthy cause.
