Splatoon Sells a Million in Europe

Splatoon Sells a Million in Europe

If you haven't played Nintendo's take on the multiplayer shooter genre, Splatoon 2, the concept is devastatingly simple. Two teams come in armed with ink guns and they each have to fill as much of the playfield with their colour as possible, maybe shooting their opponents along the way as they go. It was the first New IP for Nintendo in 2 generations of hardware and the launch last year was a huge deal. The big N have recently announced that the game has surpassed 1 million copies sole in European territories, with a worldwide figure of over three and a half milion sold.

Nintendo have also been very keen to keep the support train for the game rolling. New weapons, multiplayer maps, game modes and much more have all been added to the game since launch – and all for free. The game now boasts a total of 16 maps and 74 main weapons to wield, from the satisfying splat of the giant Rollers to the Charger type’s pinpoint precision, meaning each battle can play out completely differently to the next. These updates will continue in the coming months, with a new software update available today bringing adjustments to matchmaking and Splatfests, while April will introduce new combinations of existing weapons called “Sheldon’s Picks”, encouraging players to try out new tactics instead of sticking to their tried and tested methods.

“Reaching one million sales for Splatoon in Europe is testament to the universal appeal of this brand new kind of shooter, which everyone can play and enjoy,” said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata. “With varied titles like Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, and Super Mario Maker already available, and titles including Pokkén Tournament, Paper Mario: Color Splash and Star Fox Zero on the way, the diverse line-up of games exclusively available on Wii U is going from strength to strength.”

Totally deserved and a really positive record for the future of new IPs on Nintendo consoles. Now they just need to sort out their 3rd-party support!

It looked good at the start with an Ubisoft title as a pack in, but that doesn't seem to have continued. At least theyr'e doing better on the indie title front now.
