The Wii Shop Channel Is Closing Down
Nintendo have officially announced that in 2019 they will be closing the Wii Shop Channel for the Wii and Wii U.
The news is yet another nail in the coffin of the Wii and the Wii U as Nintendo look to the future with the Nintendo Switch. Available since December 2006, the service has been a long running one. The closure will see the end of all services related to the Wii Shop Channel as well, including the purchase of WiiWare and Virtual Console software, downloads of Wii Channels and the use of the Wii U Transfer Tool.
Here are the dates for when each of the services will be terminated:
- Adding points to the Wii Shop Channel: Monday 26th March 2018 at 21:00 UK time
- Purchase of WiiWare, Virtual Console software, Wii Channels (including free software)*: Thursday, 31st January 2019 at 06:00 UK time
- Full closure of the Wii Shop Channel and disabling of redownload functions in 2019 (more details to be announced at a later date)

Sometimes I listen to the Wii Shop Channel music just for the heck of it. Brings back some memories.
