Changer Seven Preview

Changer Seven Preview

As a fan of Power Rangers, I’ve longed for a game that isn’t a side-scrolling beat-‘em-up or a fighting game. There have been some attempts in the past, usually tongue-in-cheek, but Changer Seven is the first time I’ve seen a third-person action game tackling the subject matter.

It’s not actually based on Power Rangers, of course, it’s modelled after sentai, which is the Japanese TV show genre that Power Rangers used as a base. Literally, most scenes in those shows where the characters are in the full super suit are just dubbed over Japanese footage.

The recent playtest of Changer Seven was the first time that players could get their hands on it, so I definitely wanted to be included. It was the first 15 minutes of the game, which introduces you to the basics of each of the four main characters, during an attack on Sunny Point by the evil forces of the Chinela. Despite the short run time, I felt that the pace of each character’s introduction was set out well, starting with Red Sword Changer and introducing each other Changer in turn.

There are a few basic enemy types as well as tougher versions of each. The ordinary mooks have tougher versions, then the ones that have a melee weapon, some flying types… The playtest ended with a boss fight, which was curiously easier than some of the earlier fights — though perhaps having access to the full team and having experience did help make it seem easier.

Each Changer has a unique weapon and special moves, though at this stage, they didn’t really feel that different in combat. Even though Pink Daggers Changer has a closer range weapon than Yellow Spear Changer, only the special moves set them apart. However, again, that might be because Pink is the final character that you unlock, so I only got to use them for a short time.

Changer Seven was clearly a very early build, because I became stuck while doing Yellow’s special move against a flying enemy, some attacks caused me to gently slide upright across the ground instead of knocking me over, and just the generally unpolished everything. However, it’s a really promising start for a game looking to launch in 2026.

There’s a lot that makes me hopeful for the future of this game. The character designs are bold and evocative while still looking unique. The environments are well made whether on the city streets or in the sewers. You can interact with the general population early on, which I’m hoping will be expanded. It appears that the environment will factor into some puzzles, but it hasn't been implemented yet.

I’m ready to embrace the change, developer Gixer Entertainment, so best of luck on Changer Seven!
