Love Breakout Review

It should surprise nobody what kind of game Love Breakout is — a block-busting game where you control a paddle which runs along the bottom of the screen! With anime girls.

It states both on the Steam page and as the very first thing you see when you load the game that all characters are over 18 years old. Since there’s no nudity in the main game, only in the Love Breakout - Free 18+ DLC, that’s a curious thing to have.

As you break bricks, you uncover the fully clothed anime-style women in occasionally slightly suggestive poses. Once you complete a level, you can view the image again in the gallery.

There are a few power-ups, such as a sticky paddle, multi-ball, and giant laser beam, which drop randomly from burst blocks. However, when you start to run out of those, power-ups will start to drop randomly from the top of the screen.

Gameplay is very slow, and the number of “speed up” power-ups is frustratingly low. Due to the design of one level, I was left for about two minutes not needing to move the paddle, as the ball cleared the majority of the blocks without returning to the bottom of the level.

The entire game took me 30 minutes to finish and get all of the achievements, and I lost three lives over the 12 levels. But, if you get stuck, or simply can’t be bothered to play, the Steam page suggests pressing F to automatically complete it.

The artwork is good, with each of the characters looking distinct and well-designed. The music is a few different tracks which repeat, and they soon get repetitive.

Love Breakout is certainly not the worst in the genre, but it’s not trying to be the best either. It’s short, cheap, kind of boring, and all for 12 pieces of art.

5.00/10 5

Love Breakout (Reviewed on Windows)

The game is average, with an even mix of positives and negatives.

You’ll finish this in no time, and maybe get some Trading Cards and achievements out of it.
