WWE 2K14 Preview: The Streak Mode Detailed

WWE 2K14 Preview: The Streak Mode Detailed

The Undertaker's undefeated streak at Wrestlemania is by far one of the most impressive feats in professional wrestling history. It not only demonstrates the Dead Man's in-ring prowess and technical capability, but it highlights an impressive ability to stay relevant and popular. Taker has remained a staple of WWE programming for decades, and The Streak is a representation of that long, prestigious career. In homage to this achievement, 2K games are introducing a brand new game mode, titled The Streak, to their first grappling title, WWE 2K14. While rumours have circulated over the mode's contents, a press event this past weekend revealed the full details on the new game mode.

Placed within the expansive new 30 Years of Wrestlemania single-player mode, The Streak features two core matches that focus on the two key angles to The Undertaker’s legendary achievement. One match is titled Defeat the Streak and tasks the player with reversing history by defeating the Dead Man on the grandest stage of them all. The player can select any superstar from the huge roster, regardless of whether they’ve faced The Undertaker before. However, if you do opt for a match that has happened in the past, then the game will automatically select the appropriate arena and in some circumstances will customise the in-match commentary.

The caveat here is that within this game mode, the AI version of The Undertaker is ramped up to extreme difficulty and will prove a challenge for even the most able and experienced WWE game fan. Playing a game of Defeat the Streak, it’s instantly clear that the AI is extremely fast and effective. 2K were keen to point out that Taker won’t just counter every single move; the AI is much more intuitive and realistic. Aggression seems to be the buzzword, and he sure is aggressive, both in-game and in reality. It all comes together to form matches that are challenging, yet fun, to play, but also amusing to watch. He really can kick your ass.

The other side of the new mode is Defend the Streak which, rather than placing you in a bunch of super-easy match ups, takes on the form of a single slobberknocker match. This means you play as The Undertaker and have to fight off a collection of the Dead Man’s Wrestlemania opponents all within one gauntlet style match. So you’ve got a list of some of the greatest WWE superstars of all time to plough through, making it just as tough as the Defeat the Streak mode.

Both of these segments feature leaderboards where you can compare your achievements against the rest of the world. The Defeat the Streak mode scores you based on goals such as number of successful strikes/grapples or time taken to defeat The Undertaker. These scores will then be placed on the weekly leaderboard. The mode will also include a fan-pleasing section where you can read up on the history of The Streak, with each individual match detailed and described.

WWE 2K14 hits shelves on the 29th of October in the US and November 1st elsewhere.

Really!? While the outcomes are always obvious, that sense of 'oooh, might they' is fantastic. Less so with CM Punk, but with the HHH matches it was brill. Plus, his last 5 WM matches have been bloody fantastic, so I really don't see the boredom involved D:
