Bixy's Top 5 Dogs in Games

Bixy's Top 5 Dogs in Games

I bloody love dogs, I do. Probably not as much as I love cats, but I’ve had an awesome pet dog, Stanley, for most of my life - definitely for as long as I can remember. In memory of Stannerz, I’m going to quickly run through five dogs that I can remember from games. And no, Dogmeat is not on this list, because I can’t stand Fallout.

1. Jake from Dog’s Life

The dog my mind immediately springs to when I think of canines from interactive entertainment is Jake. Quite why I remember him so fondly, I don’t know, because I never owned a copy of that damn game. This snarky, sarcastic American Foxhound also wins the award for Dog With The Worst Box Art I Can Remember. Good job… Now go fart on a butterfly or whatever it is you do.

2. Rex from Yakuza

Adopted in Yakuza 3 by the kids of Sunshine Orphanage, Rex is one of the luckiest dogs alive. He lives in the home of the hardest man in Japan, Kazuma Kiryu, and is surrounded by family who would risk their lives for him, and his doghouse.

Also, his unexpected appearance in Yakuza 5 made me burst out laughing.

3. D-Dog from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Maybe not really a dog, more of a wolf (and I usually dress him in fox colours), but his name is D-”DOG” so he’s a dog this time.

Found roaming amongst the outposts and ruins of Afghanistan, D-Dog rapidly grows from a pup to a hound after spending an oddly short amount of time training with Ocelot. My personal favourite buddy for missions, he barks and marks enemies on the screen for you, and can find hidden ammo and hostages too. As Snake says:

4. Blinx from Blinx: The Time Sweeper

Ah no, wait - Blinx is a cat. Dang it.

5. The dog from Fable II

Everyone loves the dog from Fable II! He distracts enemies during combat, helps you romance the population of an entire continent, and plays fetch. Your companion from the beginning till the end!

Till the end, yeah? You didn’t take the money, did you?

Never let your dog die! Dogs should live forever! You are scum, my friend. Scum.

I love how under "other stories you may like" is "14 games to play on V day to forget you're lonely as fuck". Seems appropriate. Also everyone loves the Fable II dog.

*Pours one for all of the abandoned Dogz forgotten by articles like this*

And I'm not referring to the Nintendo DS series, either...
