F.E.A.R. 3 Multiplayer Summary - Our Views So Far

It’s been a while since any game has had an innovative idea for their multiplayer modes. Fear 3 seems to have got it spot on with not only one new multiplayer type, but four! These modes include Soul King, Soul Survivor, F**cking Run and Contractions.

Soul King is a mode in which all the players are ghosts called Spectres, who possess soldiers in order to kill one another. Once you possess a soldier you can collect their soul. You must try and capture the most souls by the end of the round, crowning you the Soul King. Soul Survivor is a 4 player mode in which one of you becomes the Spectre and must hunt down the others. Once you kill a player they are then on your side and you must keep killing them until there is a sole survivor. F**king Run is a coop mode with four players where you have to work together to overcome waves of enemies. Not only that but you have to keep constantly moving because there is a wall of smoke (known as the Wall of Death) that is continuously moving and once it consumes you, you’re dead. Once any member of your team is consumed, the game is over. Finally, the Contractions mode is also a four player co-op mode where you have to work together to survive endless waves of enemies (similar to Gears of War 2’s Horde mode).

The game types are obviously not original, but it’s refreshing seeing such a vast range of different modes to play. Comparisons have been linked with Contractions to Call of Duty’s Zombie Mode, and the Soul Survivor is similar to the multiplayer in the original Aliens vs. Predator. Some people are sceptical of the road F.E.A.R. 3 is taking - they feel that by doing these multiplayer campaigns that the game will lose that thrilling edge the series has to it. Will it flop? Or is it a diamond in the rough?
