Freebie Feelers... Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry

Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.

What is it?

Assassins creed freedom cry

Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry is another addition in the long running Assassin’s Creed franchise. The add-on features stealth sections, free-running, and a detailed combat system in which the player can fight multiple enemies. It also includes the more recent addition of naval battles as well as sea based missions that help break up the land segments.

As far as the timeline goes, Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry is also the downloadable continuation/follow up to Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. The game takes place 20 years after the events of Black Flag and gives players control over Adewale, as he continues the Assassin mission of fighting against the Templars and their reign of terror. The setting for the story revolves around Port-au-Prince and has a much tighter focus on themes such as justice and freedom.

What did you think?

I enjoyed Freedom Cry for the most part. The story was what held me until the end credits, not for a lack of trying in other departments. The combat and stealth aspects were fine and all, but it’s more of the same. Nothing that really pops out or tries to deviate from the norm. The ship to ship fighting did a nice job of inserting a little life into the action segments, but it doesn’t feel like there’s enough of it. That could just be me though. On a more positive note, the characters were well rounded and worth getting invested in. Especially Adewale who, as far as Assassin’s Creed protagonists go, is one of the more solid ones. I liked how he had a real investment in what he was doing, instead of… well, nothing like Arno from Unity. Here’s hoping we see him in future installments

Is it worth downloading?

Honestly, as someone who’s played all the Assassin’s Creed games, I can recommend Freedom Cry if you're fan of the series, but that’s about it. It just doesn’t do enough differently that makes it worth mentioning to anyone other than somebody who had a previous interest in the series. All in all, I’ll give it the thumbs up but there are other titles out there that are more worth your time than Freedom Cry.
