How To Get The US556 Early In Days Gone

Note(s): though not a true glitch, the method of obtaining this rifle requires exploiting the game's physics a tad. Oh, and know also that this acquisition cannot be attempted before reaching Iron Mike's Lost Lake camp, which is somewhere around the early mid-game.

So, the US556 is a very dependable general-purpose firearm, and as such, typically requires Trust Level 3 with the Hot Springs camp to unlock. That's a tough ask of any player, indeed, especially in the early hours of the game, which makes this little skip invaluable.

Now, from Lost Lake, ride over to the area on the map below — the Iron Butte pass. You'll see that it has been barricaded by the Rippers, and unfortunately, it is an area that does not unlock for exploration for some time. This is where our abuse of the physics comes into play.

To begin, you'll want to point yourself at this rock face and walk the bike up it. Do not rev the bike; only walk it forwards. And you shall soon see that Deacon’s mighty legs graduated cum laude from the Equine University of Skyrim. The guy just ignores gravity…

At the top of the first small climb, there is a patch of raised land to roll down onto. From here, it's time for the second climb, which snakes up and onto a shelf inside of Iron Butte.

Both of these parts are incredibly finicky, so don't feel bad that you don't hit them on the first try; it took me several attempts at each to get it right. I recommend dropping tactical saves right before each climb; this not only cuts down on reset times upon failed tries, but it also keeps your bike in good condition with fuel to spare.

Once you are up, make your way down to the main road and follow it a short distance to the point shown on the map below.

Ultimately, stop once you see an orange tractor accompanied by a military truck and a cluster of vehicles, with a mass grave to your far right. Just off the road and to your right (between the tractor and the grave) will be another army truck. And this one contains the US556, which is free to take.

Now, you can fast travel back to Lost Lake and continue the story.
