The GameGrin Indie Spotlight aims to give attention to videogames the independent has offered over the past month. Whether it be due to quality, success or creativeness, these are the independent games that stood out to us over the month of August.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

There are absolutely no surprises with our first entry for August. Becoming the most downloaded game in the history of the PlayStation Plus service, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has been a revelation. Mediatonic have struck gold with this adorable and addictive bean game and a promise of future seasons suggests this game may be sticking around for a long while yet.

Play if you like: Human: Fall Flat, Gang Beasts

Windbound

A game seemingly inspired by not one, but two Zelda titles. Windbound takes elements of Breath of the Wild and Wind Waker and tasks players with helping the survivor of a shipwreck survive. You will need to craft, hunt and fight in order to discover the mysteries that await in the Forbidden Islands.

Mixolumia

Mixolimia is the puzzle game that lets you chill out or work hard. This take on the block-clearing puzzle genre encourages players to play the game their own way. The game has multiple soundtracks, which allow for each level to look and feel different when they’re selected. This is a title that will suit all moods of playing.

Stacksquatch (VR Exclusive)

This cozy VR title is a challenging yet relaxing game in which you simply stack blocks. The higher you stack, the more cute cryptids you can meet. Accessible to anyone and comfortable in even the smallest VR rooms, Stacksquatch is the cute VR stacking game you didn’t know you wanted.

Kill It With Fire

Do you ever look at a spider and wish you could shoot it with a revolver? Well, now you no longer have to! Kill It With Fire is a first-person action game in which you attack and kill spiders in an increasingly dramatic fashion. From assault rifles, to lawn-strimmers to sticky bombs, Kill It With Fire is humanity's first step into reclaiming earth from the eight-legged critters.

Griefhelm

If you ever wanted to skewer your friends during a gaming night, look no further. This gorgeous 2D game offers an engaging experience, combining skill and tactical awareness. Multiplayer is a key component, both online and offline, with the ability to fight alongside friends or decapitate them where they stand.

The Battle of Polytopia

Conquer the flat planet of Square in the turn-based strategy game, The Battle of Polytopia. Either play alone or with up to 12 others, swallowing everyone’s empire as you relentlessly expand to take over the planet. With strange, yet entrancing visuals, you do not want to miss out on this unique take on the 4X genre.
