Trust GXT 493PS Carus Multiplatform Wireless Headset Review

I’ve often found that headsets can be a pain when it comes to deciding which one to buy. My main gripe has always been that many of them are only suited for one platform or connection type. Well, Trust’s GXT 493PS Carus is an over-ear wireless set that aims to provide great quality across multiple devices at a more budget-friendly price. Let’s check it out, shall we?

So, what’s in the box? Aside from the headset itself, you’ve got a 3.5 mm audio cable, a 1.2 m USB-A to C charging cable, a detachable microphone, a pop filter, and a USB-A receiver dongle. Setting up the headphones is straightforward, although you do have two options to choose from: wireless connection via the USB receiver or Bluetooth.

Either connection is quick and easy to set up, no matter what device you’re using it with. Connecting to a PC or laptop doesn’t require any drivers, so you’ll be good to go in seconds flat. Alternatively, connecting to a mobile phone via Bluetooth works like any other audio device, and I had no issues pairing the headset. For consoles, you’ll simply need to insert the USB receiver into a free slot on your machine, and that’s pretty much it! You can, of course, also use the 1.2 metre audio cable for wired connectivity. No matter what device you own, chances are the 493PS Carus will be able to connect to it. Though the box states that it’s suitable for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.

There was one relatively minor issue that did bug me: after plugging in the USB receiver into my PS5, the audio didn’t automatically swap back to my TV once the headset was powered off. This was consistent even after powering off the machine and turning it back on. I was only able to switch back to the TV in the console's settings. “Switch Output Device Automatically” was turned on, and this has never been an issue with other sets I’ve used previously, so it was a little strange that it happened with this one.

As for its appearance, the 493PS Carus isn’t overly designed and certainly looks the part. The clean, hexagonal look is really nice, and most importantly, I found the soft fabric pads fit comfortably over my ears without any discomfort after long gaming sessions, an issue I’ve come across with other headphones in the past. The headset features a volume slider, a microphone mute switch, a switch to toggle between wireless and Bluetooth connections, and the power button. There’s also a USB-C port for charging, an audio jack port, and a microphone port. All in all, a device that isn’t overburdened with too many switches and sliders, and would be perfect for casual or younger gamers looking to get their first headset.

The most important aspect of any device used for audio is obviously the sound quality. I’m pleased to say that the 493PS Carus is of a much higher quality than I initially thought it might be, although it’s not perfect. There’s good clarity across all types of audio, thanks to the 50 mm drivers that provide a relatively immersive experience. The low-latency 2.4GHz connection sounded clear throughout my gaming time, and the Bluetooth connectivity offered much of the same. The bass sounds slightly flat, and the spatial awareness when gaming isn’t super clear, but I nevertheless found these to do a decent job.

The microphone is also better than I was expecting. I took some phone calls and sent myself some voice notes to test the quality, and had zero issues with it. The caller on the other end could hear me just fine, and when listening to myself back, whilst my voice wasn’t crystal clear, there was easily enough clarity to hear exactly what was being said.

Finally, the battery. On the 2.4GHz connection, a full charge will last around 30 hours, whilst Bluetooth will net you up to 70 hours of playback. Not bad at all! With a full charge taking around an hour and a half, this is a good bit of kit for extended use and negates the need to be constantly charging your headset.

Whether or not you plan to use the GXT 493PS Carus for consoles, PC gaming, or just to listen to music, this versatile headset ensures you can do it all with minimal effort. Yes, it’s not the sharpest of audio, but for the relatively low cost of around £49.99, it’s hard to find better quality for the price.
