5 Reasons Why I'm Excited for Dauntless

For those not in the know, basically anyone who didn’t watch the Game Awards show earlier this year, Dauntless was announced to what effectively looks like humdrum success. I for one can’t wait to see what this game has in store, hitting home for my staple 3DS game of Monster Hunter (which fingers crossed will be on the Nintendo Switch). Watching the trailer alone screams Monster Hunter but for PC, but that alone doesn’t really say why I’m excited since the God Eater exists on the PC. What really tickled my fancy was the overall feel and aesthetic that scratches my Monster Hunter itch I can’t ever seem to quell with slaying monsters and having weighted combat.

It’s Monster Hunter but on PC and strikes out its own name

It may seem excessive now, but that’s what it screams to me and I’m excited for it. But really, this game looks to be more than a Monster Hunter like game. Featuring Behemoths, they are creatures that have pushed the people of the Shattered Isles back to Ramsgate. Consuming Aether (the life force of the world), they leave lifeless husks in their wake. These creatures look pretty awesome and in this announcement trailer alone, they set the stage of fighting monsters that will well and truly give you a fight for your victory.

Not just any ordinary weapons will work

When I play games, I expect there to be strong mechanics that will make come back to it time and time again. Variety helps, but really I tend to stick to the path of least resistance. In this trailer I’m expecting quite the variety, featuring your classic sword and axe, that doesn’t exactly shout compelling gameplay. A rocket powered hammer and dual wielding mini scythe that can be detached from the handle that’s connected via chains which can be whipped around to produce a dark purple blue flame? The base weapon reminds of a Kusarigama, but really this alone spices up the potential of combat withs use of Aether that for all intensive purposes looks to act like Mana in most RPGs.

Magical Weapons work, enough said?

Looking having a Master the Hunt videos they’ve released on YouTube, they look to expand on the combat in unique ways that could lead to some incredible moments of gameplay from the player. Rewarding aggressive gameplay with charging up Aether, building into what looks like truly devastating finishers and attacks. But play too reckless and the Behemoths will punish you for it. It’s mechanics like this get me excited, that and particle effects galore.

Responsive Dev team

Tale tell signs of a game that isn’t going to be well developed is often shown by the marketing and development team’s activity in the community. Although that’s not to say that a really active and responsive community management means a great game by default. However, it does mean expectations aren’t sent rampant high (a la No Man’s Sky). This isn’t exactly a reason to why I’m excited about the game, but more a confidence boost to the game being successful and not being hyped beyond what’s actually there.

It’s Free to Play, not Fee to Pay!

With that, the is supposed to be free to play. And as they said on Twitter:

Great news for anyone even remotely uninterested (which you shouldn’t be), because games can live or die because of microtransactions in a game - especially free to play MMOs like this. Having experienced the Chinese Monster Hunter (this is last mention I promise), if the game has a formula akin to that (not the same, since it’s built like that to meet Chinese regulations of limiting game sessions). There’s no doubt that people will play it for its positive use of paid content, that could even convince me spend money to show support for it. Sign up for the Beta now and reserve your name here, stated to be fully released for 2017. I am excited for this game to come out.
