Bloody Hell Hotel Just Got a Gameplay Trailer for Its Farming and Seasons Systems
Bloody Hell Hotel is a nuanced take on the management genre, as Unfold Games (the developer and publisher) took a spookier route with it: it's a vampire who is running the whole operation, and they're not known for their hospitality.
In this comedic and visually appealing title, players step into the shoes of a vampire who's been in a coma for centuries. Upon awakening, their first thought is that it's time to run a prosperous hotel! While the state of the world isn't helpful, there are shortages in everything from food to employees. Thankfully, the estate has a hidden crypt rich with everything needed to forage, farm, and craft... but, of course, there's a lot of fighting to be done first.
Aside from managing the hotel and feeding on customers whenever there are no other chores to be done, players can look forward to exploring the dungeons with the weapons they've crafted. Fight off all sorts of gnarly enemies, from skeletons to zombies, to get the items necessary to upgrade the hotel.
Once all of that is done, it's time to renovate and decorate: clean the rooms, fix the furniture, install appliances and then get hands-on with decorating everything!
In the latest Steam post, the developer goes in-depth about two of the upcoming systems: seasons and farming. They won't work like they do in other games because the farming all takes place underground, but there will be some changes, needs, and even seasonal events to keep it interesting. For those worried this will make the game annoying, the developer mentioned it's going to be a relaxing game, so the worst that happens is that the crops will just stagnate and wait for better conditions when they're not happy. No losing, no stress!
So, let's talk about the seasons and their events!
To keep plants alive throughout difficult months, players will have to rely on Steampunk machinery that will control things like the moisture level and temperature.
In spring, most crops won't need help with that, but the Fungal Bloom — the season's event — will see wild mushrooms spawning all around that can hurt the plots if left unchecked. They're not just their own type of varmint: there are some that will be edible or even useful to make poison!
When summer rolls around, crops will need help with moisture due to the dry air, though the high temperatures will be useful. During these months, players will have to deal with Magma Seep; in this event, the volcanic pressure will cause unpredictable heat surges, which will definitely not be great for plants... except maybe peppers.
Once the temperature drops down in autumn, players will need to have a heater ready to keep their plants from dying. The seasonal event for this one is called Cave Drip: if you don't control the moisture in the cave (or, er, "farm"), your plots will get flooded!
Last but not least, we've got winter, which is infamously boring and difficult in farming sims. In Bloody Hell Hotel, players can still farm as usual as long as they invest in an expensive heater upgrade and watch out for Temperature Plunge — the last seasonal event! This one just lasts one day, but it will destroy every crop.
As an homage to Stardew Valley, the developer added giant crops; these can be made by clustering one type of seed together and making sure the soil is evenly spread. While the odds of getting a giant crop are low at first, they will increase as the player levels up farming!
Aside from food, players can also enjoy farming for herbs, like coffee, teas, spices, black pepper, flowers, and other herbs (which they can use for poisons, sedatives, and even truth serums!).
For those who enjoy caring for animals more than herbs and crops, I've got fantastic news: Bloody Hell Hotel has those, too! Or, more specifically, players will have an (incredibly charismatic and adorable) cow. She will have four needs: hunger, energy, moo-vement, and hygiene. Although she won't need to be micromanaged like the crops, the happier she is, the more milk she'll produce. I haven't said the best part, either — she can be named!
Aside from Precious (that's how I'll call my cow), players can look forward to owning chickens, too! They're simpler than the cow, as they've only got two needs: hunger and movement. Let them roam and feed them, and they'll be happy and lay eggs, which can come in three different types: regular (for cooking, Golden (valuable and rare), and Dotted (which will hatch into chicken, lore items, or nothing).
Last but not least, they introduced Muddle, a garden gnome who will help around the farm: he'll make feed for the animals and get seeds from crops.
If you like what you've learned, make sure to give them some love and support on Steam by wishlisting Bloody Hell Hotel, which doesn't have a release date yet!
