Croteam Compares Serious Sam 4 to a "Dancing" Game

It's been a while since we last saw a new Serious Sam adventure, but there's not long to wait now: Serious Sam 4 is set for release August 2020 for PC and Stadia. In the latest development trailer for the frantic first-person shooter, several members of the Croteam development team discuss their approach to making Serious Sam 4 the biggest, boldest and craziest entry in the series' history. Check it out above.

Davor Hunski, Chief Creative Officer at Croteam, explains how Serious Sam—at its core—is a game of "dancing" around enemies and projectiles in an open environment, making the most of a space and being in constant motion. This understanding shines through in the gameplay: Sam doesn't stop moving, strafing, weaving and backpedalling for anything. It looks like Serious Sam through and through.

Dean Sekulić, Graphics Engineer, admits that Serious Sam 3 had a "slow start". Presumably the team regrets this decision as he continues by stating that Serious Sam 4 will be "full Sam from the beginning". No preamble, no slow-paced introduction: action, chaos and attitude from the very first moment.

Additionally, Damjan Mravunac, Sound Engineer, discusses the influence of Hollywood on Serious Sam 4's musical composition. "Layer after layer of heavy, rhythmic, powerful drums, a bit like Hollywood blockbusters" he describes. "When their music is combined with a picture, the feeling—the emotion—they inspire in a viewer. That's what I would love to do with the players".

Serious Sam 4 looks to have its heart in the right place, if nothing else. It's a matter of waiting until August to see if the game shapes up as the biggest, boldest and most insane series entry to date. With the 'Legion System' allowing for thousands of enemies to be rendered at once, it certainly seems like the game's on track for SOMETHING special.

Serious Sam 4 releases August 2020 for PC and Stadia.
