DiRT and DIRT - Two Games, Two Teams, Two Audiences

In the latest behind the scenes look at Codemasters' DIRT 5 and DiRT Rally 2.0, we're shown how the two games, developed by two separate teams, are able to drastically differ in design philosophy in order to cater to two distinct audiences. Where DiRT Rally offers realistic, intensely challenging off-road simulation gameplay, DIRT 5 embraces the spectacle of the sport by relishing in the vibrant colours and not-so hardcore fun. Check out the video and listen to the teams discuss each other's work in 'Dishing the DIRT' at the top of this page.

In the video, David Springate, Technical Director on DIRT 5, discusses how the "DIRT 5 team and the DiRT Rally team have great respect for one another". Following this up, he highlights that both teams want to "do the things that are best for our games".

Kyle Jobson, Senior Producer on DiRT Rally 2.0 praises his DIRT 5 counterparts in "pushing the spectacle of off-road racing". Repaying the praise is Robert Karp, Development Director on DIRT 5, who names DiRT Rally 1.0 and 2.0  as "probably the two best rally games there have ever been".

Ross Gowing, Game Director on DiRT Rally 2.0 points out how, with two teams, neither of them has to "divert any resource or think any differently from what (we) do best". Essentially, neither game has to compromise in achieving its respective team's vision.

Check out more insights from the guys at Codemasters in the video above.

DIRT 5 launches from October 2020. It will be available On Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC; eventually it'll also come to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Stadia.
